How to handle abnormal phenomena occurring in laminated rubber bearings
Date2026.01.14

Everyone knows that plate-type rubber bearings are an important component in bridge engineering, serving as crucial connectors between the upper and lower structures of bridges. They are directly related to the lifespan of bridges and the safety of traffic, and can also accommodate the deformations (horizontal displacement and rotation) required by the beam structure. So, what abnormalities might plate-type rubber bearings encounter during installation? Here, Hengshui Hengchuang Construction Materials summarizes and analyzes the following points for everyone:

(1) The phenomenon of corrugated unevenness on the side of the rubber bearing after being pressed occurs. The reasons for this phenomenon are as follows: Firstly, under the action of the beam, the stress point of the plate-type rubber bearing is not at the center. In mild cases, this phenomenon manifests as inconsistent corrugated unevenness on the same plate-type rubber bearing, while in severe cases, it can lead to unilateral voiding of the plate-type rubber bearing. Secondly, the pre-embedded steel plate at the bottom of the beam is uneven, and its surface is bent and deformed due to the welding of steel bars.

(2) The solution for the first reason is to inspect the beam body and the bearing pad stone of the abutment before lifting the beam. Check whether the associated part between the bottom surface of the beam end and the plate-type rubber bearing is flat, and whether the associated parts of the two plate-type rubber bearings are parallel. If they do not meet the requirements, they should be rectified immediately. The solution of using wedge blocks for filling after the beam falls should be avoided. ② The solution for the second reason is to address it during the welding and manufacturing of the steel plate at the bottom of the beam. Often, some construction companies ignore the quality issues of the steel plate at the bottom of the beam in order to save costs, directly using rough steel plates as the steel plate at the bottom of the beam or not adjusting after welding and anchoring the reinforcement, which leads to bending and deformation of the steel plate. Due to these reasons, the plate-type rubber bearing may be pressed and deviated after the beam falls.

(3) The initial shear deformation of laminated rubber bearings mainly includes the following two types: 1. shear deformation along the bridge direction of laminated rubber bearings; 2. shear deformation across the bridge direction of laminated rubber bearings.

Solutions: ① Calculations and reviews can be conducted based on the current ambient temperature, combined with the local annual average temperature, in accordance with the relevant sections of the JTG D62-2004 Design Specifications for Bridges and Culverts in the Transportation Industry. ② During the construction and installation process, it is important to strengthen the adjustment of construction techniques, conduct technical disclosure before installation, improve the construction skills of workers, and promptly inspect the deformation of each beam after installation. Any abnormalities should be adjusted in a timely manner.

(4) Another issue is caused by the arbitrariness of workers: ① The bearing pad stone is simply replaced with mortar. This practice can easily lead to insufficient or uneven bearing force at the bottom of the bearing, causing mortar cracking or uneven stress on the bearing, resulting in bearing distortion and deformation; ② The steel plate on the top of the bearing is too thin and severely rusted. Such abnormalities are prone to worsen over time, leading to severe corrosion of the steel plate, which can result in uneven stress on the bearing or the bearing being unable to bear stress.
